It’s hard to believe that there was a time in Hollywood – or indeed the world – when people hadn’t heard of James Dean, the young actor who soon went on to captivate and become emblematic of a generation before his untimely death in 1955.

Capturing this period is the latest feature from photographer-turned-filmmaker Anton Corbijn, who previously captured the life and death of another cultural icon, Ian Curtis, in the 2007 biopic Control.

Life stars Robert Pattinson as the real-life figure of Dennis Stock, a photographer who was assigned by LIFE Magazine to shadow and shoot a rising Hollywood star called James Dean (played by Dane DeHaan) in the period of time before his cinematic breakthrough in East of Eden (1955).

As the pair travel from LA to Dean’s hometown of Fairmont, India, via New York City, a friendship began to form between them, as Stock went about capturing some of the most iconic images of a unique star on the cusp of universal stardom. The outcome of this relationship was the publication of some of the most famous images of the age.

The film had its premiere at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival at Berlinale Special Gala at the Zoo Palast.
